pH-impedance and oesophageal manometry are specialised diagnostic studies used to assess reflux and the function of the oesophagus.
What each study measures
Oesophageal manometry: measures pressure and muscle coordination within the oesophagus
Oesophageal manometry: assesses how effectively the oesophagus moves food and liquids
Oesophageal manometry: evaluates the function of the lower oesophageal sphincter
Oesophageal manometry: may assist in investigating swallowing difficulties and motility disorders
pH-impedance monitoring: measures acid and non-acid reflux episodes
pH-impedance monitoring: assesses how frequently reflux occurs
pH-impedance monitoring: helps determine whether symptoms are associated with reflux events
pH-impedance monitoring: may form part of an assessment before certain treatment or surgical decisions
What to expect
1What to expect: the studies are arranged after a specialist consultation, once it is clear which information is needed
2What to expect: a thin, soft catheter is passed through the nose to record measurements; manometry is completed in the rooms, while pH-impedance recording continues over a period of time
3What to expect: preparation instructions, including guidance on food and medication, are provided directly by the practice before your appointment
4What to expect: the results are explained to you at a follow-up consultation and used to guide any further management
How the findings are used
These studies are investigations rather than treatments. Not every patient requires them; they are recommended only where they will add useful information. The findings are interpreted together with your symptoms and other results before any management is advised.
This information is general and does not replace a consultation. No outcome can be guaranteed, and the approach appropriate for you is confirmed only after a full specialist assessment by Dr Motheo T. Zimba.
